Health technology assessment in Europe

15 January 2006

Copenhagen, Denmark. The World Health Organization has produced a policy brief on health technology assessment: Health technology assessment: an introduction to objectives, role of evidence, and structure in Europe.

This policy brief introduces the concept of health technology assessment, which examines the short and long-term consequences on health and resource use of the application of a health technology. It is concerned with the medical, organizational, economic and societal consequences of implementing health technologies or interventions within the health system.

It systematically evaluates the effects of a technology on health, on the availability and distribution of resources and on other aspects of health system performance such as equity and responsiveness.

Produced on behalf of the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, the brief it is available as a PDF document at: www.euro.who.int/Document/E87866.pdf
